It’s the Super Bowl this morning . And the outcome is important for the market, as a win from a National Football Conference team is far better for the markets. So go Seattle!!
And let’s face it the US seems to need all the help it can get at the moment as earnings numbers disappoint(looking at you Amazon), free money gets taken off the table and nerves set in. The fear index or VIX which you have no doubt heard me talk about from time to time had a great week last week,up 1.5% to 18.4…that’s up 34% this year!….complacency has left the building..
Earnings season kicks off here this week and first out of the blocks is JB Hifi..shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given the update a week or so ago…but it gets us started..solid start but I suspect this will be one of the better ones.
I still expect to see our market hit 5100 in the next week or so as the earnings season kicks in..I have never seen so many downgrades and confessions in market .Seems every day there is another disaster. However all eyes will be on the RBA this week as they have their first afternoon tea of the year..expect no change to rates..in fact I expect no change for some time..at elast 6 months but anything could happen in that time….we also get the RBA view of the economy this week on Friday and its widely expected to see them upgrade their GDP numbers….usually a good thing…..anyway it seems the Aussie dollar is helping undustry..whats left of it that is and the consumer confidence as house price rises go ballistic are making the old home ATM once more the source of constant pleasure…and banks love the refinancing game..lot of it about as we draw down on our mortgages to buy that boat, car, bike, holiday etc!!!
Idea of the Day
This year will be a tough year..Jack be numble ,Jack be quick, don’t sit on that Candlestick…however I see like the finance sector with solid earings in a sea of troubles and a good yield in a low interest rate environment..property boom cannot hurt either ..just a question of when to top up…time is on your side at the moment!! Reporting season will see us test the lower end of our recent ranges…but be prepared to start buying below 5100…
Things to make me go mmmm!
Chinese PMI numbers came out over the New Year weekend and came in a little below estimates at 50.5…no real damage done and at least showing a little growth.
It was also Groundhog Day in the US with Punxsutawney Phil popping out of the ground to signal 6 more weeks of winter!
Euro inflation is falling…anyone dare say the “Stagflation”word? No growth and no inflation..a recipe for success..nine!
Went on a bit of a rant on Sky TV on Friday night about DJS and the improbable case of the insider trading that isn’t. Apparently ASIC does not consider it insider trading from a director who knows the company has been bid for from its arch rival but the market is kept in the dark about it and they buy shares after the approach!!! You have to be kidding…apparently if the shares don’t go up then its not insider..I strongly believe this is a joke!!Still the Chairman in question was in charge of the AMP at one time….Come on ASIC get some!!
Philip Seymour Hoffman…such a tragic waste …a fine actor and director..the world is a sadder place for his passing…
In the press today ..ANZ and NAB have made the biggest strides in mortgage lending as record low interest rates fire up the ¬property market. New figures show ANZ and NAB increased home lending by more than 7 per cent in 2013, topping their big four bank rivals and outstripping the broader market.
Woodside Petroleum: may be about to sign a revised $US3 billion ($3.4bn) deal to enter Israel’s big offshore Leviathan gasfield, with senior managers from the field’s owners headed to Australia this week.
Is that a skyscaper in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me!! From my friends at Zerohedge comes the Barclays World Skyscaper index!!!
Over the next several years China will be host of 5 of the world’s top 10 tallest buildings, and 14 of the top 20!
According to one source…JPMorgan owned $65.4 billion, or just over 60% of the total notional ($108.2 billion) of all gold derivatives in the US.
Looks like the Argentinians have a small problem as money is leaving the country faster than you can say Peso Crisis. They apparently are now looking to raise $10bn to defend this flight of money..good luck… certainly emerging markets will remain volatile and twitchy!
And finally…a few questions for a Monday.
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?
Why is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word?
Why is it that doctors and attorneys call what they do ‘practice’?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavouring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn’t there mouse-flavoured cat food?
Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Have a great day!
