Morning all,
Nasty move from the US last night as the stalemate over the tax increases for those earning over $1m seem to be the major sticking point. My heart bleeds but it seems that The Republicans are sticking to this. So down we went…the Dow has had a good run this year as have we…in case you have missed it the Market is up this year..that’s right up..it’s been a good year ..especially for banks and TLS holders..In fact there has only been one month this year where the market went down…it has been confined to high yield safe stocks and everything else has suffered..none more so than Media and retail.

Looking back over my comments from January last year make interesting reading..talking about TLS how much I like them..how it seemed crazy that the Dow was 12500 and we were 4100!!Talked of a trade there somewhere!!..I also thought 2012 would be the year of the Bio Tech..doh!!unless you count SRX of course…MSB, Doh!…also like NWH at 2.50 Doh!!but loved AUN at 1.00 and they got taken out…loved BRU at 1.10-1.20 ..now look at them!!anyway some wins, some rubbish calls …if you are interested in my calls from the beginning of the year then you can catch them all in one handy suppository of knowledge, beeksdownunder is my blog where I put all the daily notes…keeps me honest I suppose and you can subscribe to them there and get every thought I ever have, that seeps through the cracks in my brain!
So the big question is what is in store for 2013!!
I wrote down 10 key points to think about next year so here they are. Some are a little tongue in cheek…but we will see..
In 2013 Themes to focus on
1.The hunt for yield with low rates to continue. Takeovers rise as does volumes as retail and Instos return to the market. The Dogs rally.
2.The weakness in the oil price as US turns into an exporter. Oil sub $60 bucks helps stimulate Global GDP.
3.Aussie gas too expensive to compete with cheaper gas from elsewhere and Asia starts to compare prices. Projects continue to be cancelled, amended and mothballed.
4.Employment numbers weaken finally and the shift to part time increases.. More “white collar consultants” than ever. House prices to continue to remain sporadic as Finance, sales and marketing sectors adjust to the Brave New World.
5.China starts to grow again albeit at a lower base. Limited stimulus by Central Gov..Shanghai Market recovers back to 2500.
6.Internet retailing continues to attract dollars and department stores suffer. Government lowers the GST threshold to 500 but so hard to keep people honest everything suddenly is under 500 with massive postage charges to make up the difference.
7.Election..much closer than previously thought…Abbott loses and retires to a Monastery. New Opposition leader is Scott Morrison with his brothers Van and Jim as joint deputies!
8.TLS continue to head towards 5 bucks and Future Fund buys back in.
9.Greece gets kicked out of the Euro and nobody is surprised or cares. Germany finally wakes up and realises that the Euro is a dumb idea after all. What were they thinking anyway!!
10.UK loses its AAA rating and the French declare a national holiday!
And so final joke of the year as this will be my last official email til 2013…
It was the doctor’s last patient consultation of Christmas Eve. A mother came in with her young daughter and asked if he would examine her because she had been showing some strange symptoms, including a significant increase in weight, sickness most mornings and a number of strange cravings.
He checked her out very carefully and eventually told the mother that her daughter was unquestionably pregnant. At which news she protested very strongly.
‘Don’t be ridiculous, my daughter has never been with a man’
The girl confirmed that this was true and added that she had never so much as kissed a man.
The doctor studied the girl very carefully, then quietly stood up, walked to the window and stared out of it.
Suspecting the worst the mother asked if there was something wrong.
“No, not really” replied the doctor. ‘It might just be a coincidence, but the last time this happened a bright star appeared the East and three Kings turned up with presents.’
I am doing radio and Sky TV today and then taking a break….have a safe and Happy Xmas and have enjoyed writing this for the last year and hope to educate ,amuse and try to make you money in the coming year!
Fingers crossed.
Have a happy holiday season
