Morning all,
Fifty years ago today two events occurred that helped shape popular culture. The first was the release of ‘Love love me do’ by the Beatles and the second was the release of Dr No ,the first official James Bond film. For Trivia Buffs there was a 1954 release of Casino Royale broadcast live on CBS in the States. Now I am a huge Bond fan so today’s rant is dedicated to Ian Fleming’s hero 007!
For all your Bond Books check out my friends at the Book Depository
‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ Draghi said last night that the ECB was ready to start buying Bonds…Do you expect me to talk Goldfinger, No Mr Bond, I expect you to buy! Anyway that was enough coupled with some good economic numbers from the US to get things pushing along nicely. The BOE on instructions from ‘Her Majesty’s secret Service’ and the ECB both kept their rates unchanged as well and the US jobs numbers tonight will be the final piece of the puzzle for markets..if good as now expected we will see US markets continue to push towards 14000 and our market set its sights on 4700..its going to be a ‘Thunderball ‘if we get there!..There has been a lot of talk about the switch from banks and high yielders to more cyclical stocks…not yet I believe we need to see a ‘Quantum of Solace’ from the Chinese leadership to start that major switch..for the time being it’s still a good place to be and with World rates still low and in some cases heading lower there is no reason to sell them too aggressively yet. This rush of money to yield will also stubbornly support the Aussie Dollar where parity is beckoning but that’s probably it.Still currencies are all ‘Octopussy’ to me! Give me stocks anyday!
The ‘SPI who loved me’ was up 11 points last night but it expect it to be better than that today with 20 points in our sights early…volume will be lacklustre again as we await the US jobs numbers..Next week China comes back from holidays so we may get some more leads from their market as they play catch up to the rest of the World.
There was also some movement overnight in another unloved sector with Coal stocks in the US starting to head higher as ‘A View (to a Kill)’ was emerging that the underlying price has seen its worse…should start to flow through to our market.
More from the Echo as a buyer tried unsuccessfully last night to snap up 5% of the company…the mystery buyer is tipped to be Genting of Hong Kong..they will be back I suspect

Things to make me go all Bond, James Bond.
1.Last night Presidential debate will have been closely watched by ‘Dr No’…or in Uncle Ben’s case Dr Yeah baby(sorry slipped into Austen Powers!)….he will be out of a job if Romney waltzes into the Whitehouse where Willard White currently resides.
2.Gold(finger)had a good night last night with the metal touching 1795 briefly and news from Turkey that they have sanctioned force against Syria will keep thing bubbling along as it pushes upwards..I would expect to see $2000 by Xmas
3.Cash equity volumes are at their lowest levels since 2005 and the ASX seems poised to go to war with its customers…
4.Billabong looks like it will ‘Die another day’ as doubts emerge over TPG bid..although company says they are still in talks I get the feeling they hope they are still in talks!
5.Arrium(One Steel) has coming out fighting with assertions that ‘Diamonds are Forever’ or at least Iron Ore is and have been promoting higher production rates to fend off the consortium bidding 75cents..this has a long way to run and the bid will end up nearer $1.00 IMO..
6.Oil bounced 4% last night as tension in the Middle east simmers away…Syria continues to be the focal point and Turkey. The Turkish Parliament voted to ‘Live and Let Die’ last night and authorise force..
7.Things are hotting up in Africa with a bid lobbed at DML last night from a Chinese group..they have tried to knock the ‘Living Daylights’ out with a cash bid but I believe we will see other bidders emerge in the coming weeks..this one is in play..talked about BTR on TV last night..like this one as they look a little like BTR at an earlier stage..buy below 1.18.
8.We also saw Drillsearch bid for Acer yesterday as well and this theme will continue with bombed out resource stocks being snapped up by their competitors..lots of ‘Moonraker’ ing over other companies at the moment..more to come!
9.Woolies is splitting off its Property business plus a capital raising apparently they have had their ‘Goldeneye’ on this for some time following in the footsteps of Westfield a few years ago…
10.Samsung 3rd quarter numbers beats estimates as the ‘World is Not Enough’ for their sales battle with Apple which last night had a ‘Skyfall’ in the US down again! This will be good for sentiment around the region.
11.There was also some movement overnight in another unloved sector with Coal stocks in the US starting to head higher as ‘A View (to a Kill)’ was emerging that the underlying price has seen its worse…should start to flow through to our market.
12.More from the Echo as a buyer tried unsuccessfully last night to snap up 5% of the company…the mystery buyer is tipped to be Genting of Hong Kong..they will be back I suspect…’You only live twice’ maybe their motto! Packer still looking for that Extra ‘Licence to Kill’ makes this an interesting play at the moment and would expect them to move back up
And finally…
Bond: Who are you?
Pussy: My name is Pussy Galore.
Bond: (pauses) I must be dreaming
Have a great weekend ‘Tomorrow never Dies’ as they say.
Clarence
