Upmarket department store David Jones says a takeover bid proposed by a little-known UK private equity group has been withdrawn.

The company earlier called a trading halt in its shares as confusion grows over the credibility of a $1.65 billion takeover offer for the group last week and the financial backing of its takeover suitor.
